Archer, Levy (19 AUG 1835 - 4 APR 1889)
Our people were
shocked to hear last Sunday morning that Mr. Levy Archer, whose
familiar face and cheery "How de do" had greeted them on the street
every day for many years, had died suddenly from heart disease
Saturday evening. He had been down to his stave mill at Shortville,
and after supper had started for home in his cart. Shortly after,
he was found lying down on the side of the road, with his horse
hitched to the fence near the Wesenburg farm in the town of
Washburn, Clark County. He had become so sick that he could not sit
in the cart, and laid down to see if he could not get relief. He
was taken to the Wesenburg house, where he died in a few minutes.
His funeral took place at the Court House in this city, Tuesday,
and was attended by a large concourse of people. He was a prominent
Mason and Knight Templar, and was buried under the funeral
ceremonies of the order. The Knights Templar of Eau Claire to the
number of 40 chartered a special train to bring them to the funeral
of their brother knight, and being joined by others from Black
River Falls and Neillsville, made an imposing and interesting
procession in their fine uniforms. The Masonic Lodge of this city,
with many Masons from abroad, were also in the process. The sermon
was preached by Rev. J.D. Brothers.
Mr. Archer was born in Orleans Co., N.Y., Aug. 19, 1835, with his
parents, went to Indiana in 1842, where he ran a saw mill, learned
the blacksmith's trade of Zekiel Johnson, came to the Black River
and engaged in the lumber business, and, in 1874, moved on his
farm. In 1858, he married Miss Rosissa Straight, of Jackson
County.
