Stockwell, Desdamona (7 MAR 1821 - 8 MAR
1896)
Mrs. Desdamona Stockwell, died at the home of
her son, C. S. Stockwell, in this city (Neillsville, Clark County),
Sunday morning, March 8th, 1896, at the age of 75 years.
Mrs. Desdamona Stockwell was born at White Plains, N.Y., March 7th,
1821. In 1836 she came to Michigan territory with her mother's
family. She was married to Abel Stockwell Nov. 24, 1839, and went
onto a new clearing in the then wild territory of Michigan,
experiencing all the thrilling incidents of a frontier life, with
only Indians for neighbors, for a number of years. Abel Stockwell
died in 1866. He was a descendant of a race whose pedigree can be
traced back for several generations.
Eight children were born to them, but two of whom are now living,
C. S. Stockwell of this city, and Amos Stockwell, who lives on the
old farm in St. Claire County, Michigan, 10 miles from Port
Huron.
When C.S. Stockwell went to the World's Fair in 1893, he went to
Michigan and brought his aged mother back to reside with him as
long as she wished, and he has done for her everything a loving and
dutiful son could do to make her last days on earth pleasant.
The funeral was held at Mr. Stockwell's residence Tuesday forenoon,
Rev. G. N. Foster officiating. The remains were interred in the
city cemetery.
