Huntley, Mary (1814 - 15 JAN 1897)

Mary Huntley died in this city (Neillsville, Clark County) Friday forenoon at the age of about 83 years, and was buried Sunday, the funeral obsequies being held at the Unitarian Church by Mr. Owen, of Arcadia.

Mrs. Mary Huntley was born in Sheffield, England in 1814. In 1836 she was married to William Huntley, of Glasgow, Scotland, and in 1840 they came to America and resided in Buffalo, N.Y. for two years, when they moved to Milwaukee in 1846, where they also resided about two years. In 1848 they moved to Washington County, where in 1854 Mr. Huntley died, leaving is wife with a family of five children, and in rather poor circumstances. There was a small mortgage on the place at the time of Mr. Huntley's death, and the neighbors, wishing to show their appreciation for the deceased and his family, and knowing their condition, subscribed enough money to pay off the mortgage, which they donated to the widow. Mrs. Huntly and her family resided there until 1869, when they moved to Clark County, where the widow has since resided. She leaves four grown sons and one daughter: Richard, William John, Thomas, and Mrs. A. Sufficool.

Twenty seven grandchildren and two or three great-grandchildren survive the good old lady. Thus endeth the life of Grandma Huntley, a long and patient sufferer.
