Becherer, Marie (National Fellowship - 1963)
Twenty-six students, including a girl from Colby, at Eau Claire State College,
have been nominated for the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship, Dr. Parviz
Chahbaal, coordinator of scholarship information at the college, has announce.
The Wilson National Fellowship Foundation provides full support for one academic
year of graduate study to 1475 students entering professional college teaching.
Miss Marie Becherer of Colby, majoring in mathematics, is among the nominees.
The stated purpose of the Foundation "is to attract large numbers of men and
women to the profession and to encourage students to apply for other aid."
To be eligible, the student must be a citizen either of the United States or
Canada, a graduate or senior in one of the colleges or universities of the
United States or Canada, and have outstanding intellectual promise.
The Foundation primarily supports candidates in the humanities and social
sciences. Local nominations are made by members of the college faculty. A
regional committee selects approximately ten per cent of the applicants to go to
Minneapolis for personal interviews. Selections are then made on the basis of
the interview and the quality of the nominee's preparation for graduate study.
