Sternitzky, Leona A. (12 September 1913 - 24 January 2013)

Leona A. Sternitzky, 99, of Marshfield died Thursday Jan. 24, 2013, at Ministry St. Joseph’s Hospital Palliative Care.

Leona was born Sept. 12, 1913, in Globe, where she also attended school. She was the daughter of Albert and Mary (Hoffmann) Kalsow. Her family later moved to Neillsville where she worked in a bakery. She married Edwin Sternitzky Oct. 11, 1936, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Neillsville, and they celebrated their Golden wedding anniversary in 1986. Edwin died Jan. 1, 1991.

Leona and Edwin farmed most of their lives on a farm near Granton. Leona had a passion for baking, which included baking and decorating wedding cakes. She could make an apple pie like no other. While farming, she took much pride in her beautiful flower gardens. In w990, they moved to Marshfield, and she as a cook at Ann’s Kiddie Kare and Ann’s Kiddie Kastle. She was cook and “Grandma” to many children at the day care. After the loss of her husband, she lived with family and lastly at the Marshfield Care Center.

She enjoyed visiting with people, watching the Brewers, crocheting and especially the time she spent with grandchildren. She celebrated her 95th birthday at a Milwaukee Brewers game.

She is survived by two sons, Allen (Judy) Sternitzky and Gary (Joyce) Sternitzky, and a daughter, Ann Marie Schlinsog. She is further survived by grandchildren and their families, Jeff (Sandy) Schlinsog, Heidi and Wendy; Jay (Ann) Schlinsog, Hayley, Jacob and Jordan; Jim (Michele) Schlinsog, Evan and Matthew; Janelle (Don) Diener, Courtney, Drew and Brynn; Mark Sternitzky; Matthew (Patti) Sternitzky; Marlea (Jeremy) Lucas, Gavin and Cadence; Maribeth (Scott) Pankratz, Trayton, Jayden and Chase; Monica (Darin) Rood, Madison, Emma and Ryan; Jon (Heather) Sternitzky, Riley and Aydin; and Sara and Liza Sternitzky. She had a special Godchild, Charlotte Moh, and is also survived by her Pekinese puppy, Liberty “Tiny”.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sisters, Evelyn, Fala and Gertrude; a brother, Victor; a granddaughter, Maria; and extended grandson, Greg Wichelman; many cousins, aunts, uncles, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at Zion Lutheran Church, Granton, with Rev. Dan Schoessow officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery, and serving as pallbearers will be grandsons, Mark, Matthew and Jon Sternitzky, and Jeffrey, Jay and Jim Schlinsog. The visitation will be held Friday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Rembs Funeral Home, Marshfield, and Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church.

Jan. 1, 1991: Dear Dad, Your last words to Jim Schlinsog were; “Take Care of Grandma.” I hope you are proud of us today.
