Henke, Mary Ellen (14 September 1933 - 29 January 2013)

Mary E. Henke, 70, of Stanley, passed away on Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at Oakwood Villa Nursing Home in Altoona, under the care of St. Joseph’s Hospice.

Mary Ellen Von Haden was born on the family farm near Augusta, WI on September 14, 1933, the daughter of Adolph and Kathryn (Wagner) Von Haden. She attended Dells School in rural Augusta.

She was united in marriage to Donald Henke on June 7, 1958, in Augusta, WI. They lived and farmed in the town of Worden until 1986 when they retired and moved to Stanley. Mary was a member of the Holy Family PCCW, and the South Worden Social Circle. She also belonged to T.O.P.S. She loved to play cards and especially enjoyed winning. Everyone who visited Mary knew they would be treated to one of her chocolate chip cookies. Her cookie jar never seemed to run empty. The children in her life were encouraged to help with her baking. One of Mary’s numerous hobbies was embroidering. She used these skills to make many quilts for the people in her life to enjoy. The blankets she made for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren became their favorite blankies and were well loved.

She is survived by her children: Bill (Brenda) Henke, Gary (Paulette) Henke, Patricia (Ron) Potaczek, all of Thorp, Bob (Paula) Henke and Mike (Lois Hodowanic) Henke of Stanley, and Tom Henke of Cadott; her grandchildren: Kevin, Amanda, and Chad Henke, Ashley, Keith and Lynn Henke, Cora (Joe) Wehling, Carlene (Chuck) Douglas, Catherine (Ryan) Butterfield, Cindy (Korey Hagenson) Potaczek, Carissa Potaczek, and Adam Potaczek, and Aiden Henke; her seven great-grandchildren: Mariah and Ian Wehling, Keara, Scott and Austin Butterfield, Alex and Marshal Douglas; two brothers: John Von Haden of Augusta and Jim Von Haden of Fall Creek; three sisters: Esther (Kenneth) Stelter of Bloomer, Barbara Anderson of Cadott, and Dorothy (Donald) Perkovich of Augusta; sisters-in-law: Pat Von Haden and Joy Von Haden; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Don (1998); her parents; two grandchildren: Melissa and Craig Henke; a sister, Irene Collier; and two brothers: Leonard Von Haden and Dean Von Haden.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 4, 2013, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Stanley with Fr. Edward Shuttleworth officiating. Inurnment will take place in the Parish Cemetery at a later date. Visitation was from 2 until 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Plombon Funeral Home, Stanley, with a 5:30 p.m. parish rosary. Visitation continued from 10 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.
