St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Bell (Removal - 1968)
The old St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Bell, which was called members to
worship and tolled the knell of parting parishioners for more than 80 years, was
removed from its tower Tuesday. The bell, weighing an estimated 1,000 to 1,200
pounds, was lowered to the ground after the spire was lifted off. Sixteen bolts
held the stately spire in place over the bell tower. The St. John’s bell is to
be refurbished and polished and will be re-installed at the new St. John’s
Evangelical Lutheran Church site, now under construction.
