Bergman, Ellen Eliina (Niemi) (September 30, 1906 – May 12, 2011)
Ellen Eliina Bergman, 104, Ogema, died on Thursday, May 12 at Golden LivingCenter in Rib Lake.
Funeral services were held on Monday, May 16 at Trinity Lutheran Church in
Prentice, with Rev. Gary Uttech officiating. Interment was at Leavitt Creek
Cemetery in the Town of Hill.
The former Ellen Niemi was born on September 30, 1906 in Republic, Mich. to the
late Franz Isak and Hilda (Komanti) Niemi. The family moved to Chelsea in 1908
and to Ogema in 1918.
She attended grade school in Chelsea and later Leavitt Creek Grade School. She then lived in Ironwood, Mich., for one month, then moved back to the area and did babysitting.
On June 24, 1927 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Ogema, she married John Jalmer
Bergman, who preceded her in death.
They moved to Madison in 1927 and lived there until moving back to Ogema in 1946 when they took over the Bergman farm from his parents. They owned and operated the farm until 1966.
She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Trinity Lutheran Church, and the
Ladies Aide of both churches, sang in the church choir, taught Sunday school and
was an organist and pianist at both churches. She enjoyed making rugs,
crocheting, baking, making cheese, driving, picking raspberries, canning,
babysitting grandchildren, and spending time with her family, especially the
family babies.
Survivors include a son, Roger (Eva) of Ogema; two daughters, Beverly Uselmann
of Madison and Vivian Quinn of Schaumburg, Ill.; 17 grandchildren; 29
great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five
brothers and five sisters.
Memorial contributions in her honor may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church.
Dallmann-Kniewel Funeral Homes of Medford and Rib Lake assisted the family with arrangements.
