Werner, Irene H. (Gehrig) (January 25, 1917 - December 4, 2010)

Irene H. Werner, 93, Medford, died Saturday, Dec. 4 at Ministry St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield, where she had been a patient the past two days, with her children by her side.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 10 at 11 a.m. at Community United Church of Christ in Medford, with Pastor Cathy Hinman officiating. Burial will be at Medford Evergreen Cemetery II. Pallbearers are her grandchildren, Peter Harrison, Virginia Harrison, Andrea Werner, Heather Havilyo, Jessica Wald and Damian Stanton.


Visitation will be held on Thursday, Dec. 9 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Hemer Funeral Home in Medford, and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.


The former Irene Gehrig was born on January 25, 1917 in the Town of Browning to the late Christ and Anna (Galler) Gehrig. She attended Town of Browning elementary schools and was a 1935 graduate of Medford High School.


On June 30, 1938 in Rhinelander, she married Harold H. Werner, who preceded her in death on December 26, 2000.

She worked most of her life as a housewife and mother. She resided at Country Gardens for three years and at Memorial Nursing and Rehab Center in Medford the past 1-1/2 years.


She was a member of Community United Church of Christ and its Woman's Guild, Town of Browning Homemakers Club and Chelsea Conservation Club. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, traveling and her grandchildren.


Survivors include a daughter, Jill (Jerry) Stanton of Menomonie; a son, Jack (Hester) of Menomonee Falls; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.


In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 14 brothers and sisters.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be given in her name to Community United Church of Christ.
