Terryberry-Hetrey, Margaret E. (Matis) (July 17, 1915 - November 12, 2010)
Margaret E. Terryberry-Hetrey, 95, Medford, died Friday, Nov. 12 at Memorial Nursing Home and Rehab Center in Medford, where she had resided the past 2-1/2 years.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 18 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Medford, with Pastor Brian Wipf officiating. Burial will be at Medford Evergreen Cemetery II. Honorary pallbearers are Dan and Scott Matis and Bob Rettie. Active pallbearers are Mike Jr. and Kurt Guziak, Eric Landry, Matt Harris, Vern Long and Michael Terryberry.
The former Margaret Matis was born on July 17, 1915 in Chicago, Ill., to the
late Michael and Mary (Solyon) Matis. She graduated from Austin High School in
Chicago in 1931, and earned a registered beauty culturist certificate from
Beauty Culture School in Chicago.
On May 14, 1937 in Crown Point, Ind., she married George Terryberry, who
preceded her in death on September 1, 1978.
She married Michael Hetrey and they later divorced.
She owned and operated four beauty shops in the Chicago area until 1944, when she and her husband, George, moved to Galveston, Texas, where she sold hats and later worked for Starr Dairy in payroll until 1947. They then purchased a small dairy farm in the Town of Greenwood and farmed until 1978, while she also worked as a CNA at Memorial Hospital of Taylor County for nine years. She was a cook and baker at Miracle Mile Diner for a year and also a housekeeper and cook for the Holy Rosary Rectory in Medford for several years.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Order of the Eastern Star Medford
Chapter No. 254, and past 4-H leader and a volunteer at Riverview Apartments for
food service. She enjoyed cooking, singing and playing the piano, spending time
with her family, reading and writing poetry, and bowling.
Survivors include a daughter, Margie (Michael Jr.) Guziak of Medford; a
daughter-in-law, MaryAnn Terryberry of Rockford, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy
Matis of Orland Park, Ill.; five grandchildren, Debra (Eric) Landry of Hawthorn
Woods, Ill., Kurt (Jackie) Guziak of Newnan, Ga., Marla (Matt) Harris of Wausau,
and Michael (Evelyn) Terryberry and Michele (Vern) Long, both of Rockford; five
great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons,
Michael, in infancy, and Douglas on March 26, 2000; two brothers, Joseph and
Michael; a sister, Ethel Rettie; and special friend, Melvin Gauerke.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to her family to be designated at a
later date.
Hemer Funeral Service of Medford assisted the family with arrangements.
