Bergmann, Herbert G. “Herb” (September 23, 1926 - January 13, 2009)

Herbert "Herb" G. Bergmann, 82, Town of Goodrich, died Tuesday, Jan. 13 at Walnut Grove Assisted Living in Merrill where he had resided the past six weeks.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Medford, with Rev. Peter Warmanen officiating. Interment will be at Medford Evergreen Cemetery II, with full military honors performed by the Medford Area Military Honors Team. His grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.

Herbert Bergmann was born September 23, 1926 in the Town of Goodrich to the late Henry Gustav and Elsie Charlotte (Harmel) Bergmann.

He attended Washington School in the Town of Goodrich and Medford High School.

He served in the United States Army from March 16 1945 to May 17, 1947 and was stationed in the Philippines. After the service, he helped on his father's dairy farm and also logged.

On July 23, 1955 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Merrill, he married Priscilla "Peachy" I. Yorde, who survives. He was a welder at Paustenbach Machine Company for six years, and he and his wife both worked at Avon Theater on Main Street in Medford. He and his brother then operated his family's dairy farm after his father's death. He also did select logging on his family's woodland and worked as a welder for Janke Construction in Athens.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and past member of VFW Klossner-Dietzler Post No. 5729. He served as clerk for the Town of Goodrich from 1966 to 2004, served as county board supervisor from 1984 to 2002, served two terms as county board chairman, and was instrumental in founding the Gerstberger Pines County Park in Rib Lake. He enjoyed reading, telling stories, crafting with his wife and berry picking with his family, and in his younger days he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Susan (Dan) Thiede of Medford, Cindi (Jim) DeKoch of Zelienople, Penn., Nancy (K.C.) Corley of Stetsonville and Barb (Jeff) Ludwig of Medford; two brothers, Norman and Roland (Jean), both of Medford; a sister, Carol (John) Zinkowich of Athens; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert and two in infancy; and two sisters, Elizabeth Hallberg and Margaret Henkel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to his family to be designated at a later date.
