Noland, Marcella E. (Rothamer) (December 5, 1917 - March 9, 2012)

Marcella E. Noland, 94, Medford, died on Friday, March 9 at her home, surrounded by her loving family and Hope Hospice.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 14 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Medford, with Father Gerard Willger and Deacon Joseph Stefancin officiating. Burial was at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Medford. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Brian, Matthew, Travis and Randy Noland, Steven Henrichs, Mike Frischmann and Jeremy Erl.

Hemer Funeral Service of Medford assisted the family with arrangements.

The former Marcella Rothamer was born on December 5, 1917 in the Town of Little Black to the late George and Margaret (Forst) Rothamer. She attended Holy Rosary Catholic School in Medford. She started taking sewing lessons in 1931 in Medford from Mrs. Malchow, a friend of her mother. She became a talented seamstress, sewing her own wedding dress and the bridesmaid dresses for her wedding.

On June 20, 1936 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, she married Carl E. Noland, who preceded her in death on August 22, 1998. Immediately following their marriage, they lived in the city of Medford until 1946 when they purchased the farm in the Town of Browning that Carl had worked on as a hired hand when he was a teenager. In 1981 they moved off the farm to their log home they built, and she lived there until the time of her death.

She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and past member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Whittlesey. She was a great cook and loved to bake. Homemade bread, pies and cookies, especially her decorated cutout Christmas cookies, were her specialty, and her family's favorite, butterscotch pudding dessert. No gathering was complete without it. She loved to garden, raising most of the family's produce in their own garden, then she would can and freeze it. She gardened until the age of 92. She will be missed for her gentle smiles, her compassion and kindness she showed to everyone, love of family and her unending faith.

Survivors include seven sons, Robert (Delores), Lester (Joyce), Lee (Nancy), David (Sharon), Patrick (Audrey), and Michael (Christine) Noland, all of Medford, and Lorin "Larry" (Linda) Noland of Kent, Wash.; four daughters, Esther (Peter) Henrichs, Sharon (James) Frischmann and Sandy (Don) Erl, all of Medford, and Margaret "Maggie" (David) Dahl of North Mankato, Minn.; four brothers, Raymond of Muskego, Melvin (Mildred) of Janesville, Ted of Elkton, Md., and Gene (Shirle) of Medford; 42 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; 28 great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Daniel Erl in 2000; two great-grandchildren, Amanda Anderson in 1982 and Lucas Henrichs in 1996; and two sisters, Dorothy Laher and Harriet Laher.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in her name to Hope Hospice of Medford or Holy Rosary Catholic School.
