Nickel, Donald L. (1 July 1932 - 31 May 2009)

NEKOOSA -- Donald L. Nickel, 76, Nekoosa, unexpectedly went home to be with his Lord on Sun. May 31, 2009.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wed. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Nekoosa. The Rev. Carl Kummer will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Nekoosa.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Feldner/Ritchay Funeral Home, Nekoosa and also Wed. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Don was born July 1, 1932, in Granton, to Ray and Ruth (Bartz) Nickel. He married Lolita Gloff on Oct. 8, 1955, in Granton. Don worked at Rollohome in Marshfield for two years. Following this, he worked at Nekoosa Papers (GNN, G.P.) for 33 years, working various jobs in both the Port and Nekoosa mills and retired as a Beater Room supervisor. Don served his country in the Army Reserves from 1955 to 1963.

Don was a long-time member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where he served in many leadership capacities. He also served a number of years as a 2nd Ward Alderperson for the City of Nekoosa. Don also contributed much of his time to charitable and community service projects, such as Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels.

Don's interests included fishing, hunting, gardening, investing, carpentry and dancing.

Don is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Lolita, Nekoosa; six children, Lois (Steve) Lockwood, Cudahy, Rev. Steve (Jeanne) Nickel, Appleton, Dr. Gail (Tim) Lincoln, Windermere, Fla., Judy (Brad) Hoffmann, Kohler, Brian (Liz) Nickel, Stevens Point, and Amy (Dan) Weiler, Stevens Point; 18 grandchildren; brother, Bill (Irene) Nickel, Granton; sister, Mary Ann (Robert) Krainz, Willard; mother-in-law, Fala Gloff, Marshfield; and sister-in-law, Carol Derge, Marshfield.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; and sister-in-law, Sylvia Nickel.

Don Nickel gave selflessly of his time, talents and treasure to help his family, friends, church and community as well as to spread the Gospel throughout the world. Well done faithful servant.
