Weinfurtner, Sylvester J. (20 Apr. 1915 - 9 May 2009)

WISCONSIN RAPIDS -- Sylvester J. Weinfurter, 94, died Sat.evening, May 9, 2009, at the Wisconsin Rapids Care Center. He was born in the town of Sherry, April 20, 1915, to Ignatz and Anna (Altmann).

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wed. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Officiating will be the Rev. William Menzel. Military flag presentation and committal will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Sylvester served stateside in the infantry during World War II.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the Higgins Funeral Home; and then again from 10 a.m. until time of services Wed. at the church. A parish prayer service will be at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Sylvester married Genevieve Rendmeister in Wisconsin Rapids on Aug. 26, 1944. She died May 9, 1995.

Sylvester (a.k.a. Fisher) traveled throughout the Midwest in his early adult years working on farms and logging camps. He later worked as a laborer for Consoweld Corp., in Wisconsin Rapids, for a number of years before deciding to return to farming. He owned and operated a farm in the Pittsville area and also had a milk route. Again, needing a change in lifestyle, he sold the family farm and moved back into Wisconsin Rapids, where Sylvester took up carpentry. He owned and operated his own carpentry business, retiring in 1977.

Survivors include one son, Duane (Marjorie) Weinfurter, Wisconsin Rapids; daughter-in-law, Jean Weinfurter, Wisconsin Rapids; two brothers, Leo (Kathy) Weinfurter, town of Rudolph, and LaVerne (Joan) Weinfurter, Milladore; six sisters, Ida Klawikowski, Helen Capek, Bernice (Robert) Schroedel and Violet (Richard) Zabel, all of Wisconsin Rapids, Evelyn Dobbs, Junction City, and Virgiline (Joe) See, Chippewa Falls; grandchildren, Jeff (Michelle), Greg (Linda), Missy, Brian (Paulette) Weinfurter, Brenda (Tom) Prange, Marcie Nicholls, Lori (Mark) Schmeling; and great-grandchildren, Katie, Jamie, Mike, Dan, Cassandra, Mitchell, Lucas and Jared.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve; his son, Merlin, in 2002; three brothers and three sisters. Sylvester enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed baiting bear up north at the cabin, deer hunting and fishing.
