Montag, Mrs. Harold ‘Hilda’ (Organist - 1975)
Mrs. Harold Montag was feted Sunday, June 22, for 50 years of faithful
service as organist of Christ Lutheran Church, Chili.
Then children of the Sunday school presented Mrs. Montag with a corsage, and
later sang a song in her honor. Pastor Everett Schleef commended her for her
faithfulness and dedication of service. A song of appreciation was sung by
Mrs. Henry E. Grottke. The closing hymn, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,”
was chosen by Mrs. Montag as her favorite.
Following the church service, a potluck dinner was served. The church
parlors were decorated in gold and white, and a floral arrangement of golden
roses centered the head table as a gift from her Walther League.
As a memorial to the occasion, the Ladies Aid Society of Christ gave a lamp
to the congregation for use by the organist. As a personal remembrance, they
also presented Mrs. Montag a statuette of Christ in Gethsemane. She received
other gifts and greets as well. A piano-shaped cake which graced the head
table was baked by Mrs. Henry E. Grottke.
A short program was also presented in the organist’s honor. Mrs. Marvin
Merger was emcee. An original song, written and sung by Mrs. Norman Faber
was dedicated to Mrs. Montag. Mrs. Melvin gave a reading. On behalf of the
entire congregation, President Lyle Doehr presented the honoree with a money
gift. Mrs. Henry E. Grottke closed the program by singing another of Mrs.
Montag’s favorite hymns. Special mention was made of Mrs. Gerald Dankemyer’s
service as organist at the time when Mr. and Mrs. Montag’s son was very
small.
Guests of honor seated at the head table with Hilda Montag were her husband,
Harold; their son Elgene and his wife, Joyce; her mother, Mrs. Laura Beil;
Mrs. Minnie Beil and Mrs. Anne Montag, all of Chili; and Pastor Everett
Schleef, Granton.
Altogether 120 guests were served.
