Valeria was born July 31, 1920, in the town of Otter Creek, Eau Claire County, the daughter of Max and Linda (Dehnke) Lange. She was educated in the Eau Claire County school system. After leaving school, she worked for a time in both Wausau and Milwaukee. She and Lawrence Rau were united in marriage Oct. 23, 1949, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church near Foster. They lived for a short time in Augusta, eventually moving to New Richmond, where their son, Tom, was born. In 1954, they moved to Chilton. While in Chilton, Valeria studied to become a nursing assistant. After graduating, she worked part time at Calumet Memorial Hospital caring for burn victims, stroke patients and cancer patients. She left this job when their second child, daughter Teri, was born. Their final move was to Marshfield in 1964. During her years in Marshfield, Valeria was active in the Christ Lutheran Altar Guild, the Marshfield Women's Club, and was a lifetime member of Saint Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary. She taught Sun.school for many years, worked as a volunteer in the schools and enjoyed attending a variety of Bible studies at Christ Lutheran Church.

Of all the things she did in her life, Valeria devoted special energy to her roles as a wife to Lawrence, a mother to Tom and Teri, and as Grammy to Josh, Ben and Zak. Valeria was a woman of deep and abiding faith and her presence in the lives of her family and friends will be greatly missed.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and its Altar Guild, the Marshfield Women's Club and a life member of Saint Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence H. Rau; two children, Thomas L. (Margaret) Rau and Theresa L. (Lee) Williams, all of Wausau. She also is survived by three grandchildren, Joshua T. Rau of Brooklyn, N.Y., Benjamin J. Rau of Olympia, Wash., and Zachary L. Rau of Wausau. She is further survived by a brother, Myron M. (Bonnie) Lange of Augusta.

She was predeceased by her parents.
