Mr. Howard was born Oct. 1, 1921, in Crandon, to Charles and Sarah (Lambert) Howard. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II and was stationed in Trinidad for 26 months out of his four years in the service, being discharged in 1945. He acquired his pilot's license through veterans' benefits and enjoyed flying from Wisconsin to Grant, Mich. He and Anna Barry were united in marriage in 1945 until her death Aug. 27, 1966. He later married Janice Snell on Feb. 26, 1971, in Rockford, Ill. He had worked at Friskies Cat Food Company in Jefferson for 26 years until 1983. He had resided in Grant, Mich., from 1945 until 1956 and then lived in Whitewater until 1986, when he moved to Pittsville after his retirement to spend his days doing what he loved most, hunting and fishing.
Other than the birth of his children, Orie's proudest moment came in 1980, when he shot a 12-point buck with bow and arrow. This record buck earned 139 points in Pope and Young.
He is survived by his wife, Janice, and his children, William Howard of Marshfield, Nathan Howard of Pittsville, Michael (Juanita) Howard of Fort Atkinson, Kristina Howard (Larry Zabel) of Port Edwards, and Lisa (Eric) Riedel of Spencer. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is further survived by sisters, Irene Lemke and Viola (Chris) Shoop; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Anna; a son, Charles Howard; two daughters, Laureva Howard and Debra Howard; a great-grandson, Brent Aldich; two brothers and four sisters.
The family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff at the House of the Dove for their loving care.
"I'm glad to have you at my side my friend and
I'll join you in the big hunt before too long
We're not alone when we're in the great outdoors
We got his spirit
We got his soul
He will guide our steps and our arrows home
The restless spirit still roams"
