On Halloween night a party of sixteen or more boys and young men in the
vicinity of York Center (Clark Co., Wis.) got out to "make things move."
Horace Lawrence , who is building a house on his new place north of the
Corners, some distance from the rented house where he lives, went over to
the building to see that nothing was disturbed by the crowd. He found
nothing touched, but as the boys were making merry across the road, he went
over, as he states, to ask them not to disturb his lumber, tools, etc. For
some reason the boys began to pelt him with dirt and stones, and one stone
struck him in the face with such force as to knock him down and make him
unconscious for a short time. Three of his teeth were knocked out, his lip
cut through and his face badly bruised and lacerated.. On their failing to
make amends satisfactory to him, he had sixteen of the boys arrested. They
had their preliminary hearing Monday
At the Courthouse before Justice Campman, and all of them were bound over to
Circuit Court. All were released on bail at $100 each. (Neillsville
