American Legion Honors More Veterans (Lamovec - 2019)
Willard native Al Lamovec will be recognized for his military service by
American Legion Post 73.
In 1969, Lamovec enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in lieu of the draft.
After entering the Marine Corps, Lamovec had basic training and went through
an infantry training regimen at Camp Pendleton in California.
Lamovec also attended the chemical corps school at Fort McClellan in Alabama
to receive an instructor and teacher status.
He served two years in the U.S. Marine Corps 3rd Marine Air Wing in El Toro,
CA, where he taught officers protective measures in the event of a chemical,
biological or nuclear exposure or attack. Lessons included treatment after
exposure, how to use protective equipment and treatment analysis.
Lamovec was discharged in 1972 as an E-5, which is a non-commissioned
officer who is also a sergeant.
After discharge, he moved to Minneapolis, where he lived for 20 years.
There, Lamovec trained surgeons to use mechanical surgical devices,
including lasers, prosthetics and staplers for automated surgery.
Following his time in Minnesota, Lamovec moved to Bellingham, WA, where he
was a real estate broker for 10 years.
After living in Washington, he moved back to Wisconsin and has lived in
Chippewa Falls for the past 20 years. He works on developing veteran camps
and works part-time in an environmental lab.
Lamovec married his wife, Katherine, in 1982. They have two children –
Kristine and Kurt – and five grandchildren.
Lamovec is on the boards of directors for The Highground and Chippewa Falls
Veterans Home. He is also on the veterans home’s recreation board.
He manages and maintains Camp Victory, which is owned by The Highground. He
organizes five veteran archery hunts each fall. For that, he conducts
training, provides food, guides and cooks, He also sets up housing,
equipment and schedules.
Lamovec is also a member of America Veterans, the American legion and Marine
Corps league.
After attending West Eaton Grade School and graduating from Greenwood High
School in 1964, Lamovec attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He
graduated in 1969 with a degree in biology and chemistry.
Lamovec will be honored at Post 73, 6 Boon Boulevard, Neillsville, this
Monday, Sept. 2. There will be a social hour at 4:30 p.m. and a potluck at
5:30 p.m.
