Last week twelve head of cattle faced death when a shed which was covered by
a straw stack collapsed on the farm of Charles Schaffner near Spokeville
(Clark Co., Wis.), completely burying the herd. The herd consisted of young
stock for which Mr. Schaffner had no room in the barn. He saw the stack
falling and notice the roof caving in, and hurried to the rescue, but was
unable to drive out the stock, and to save his life, had to leave the place.
He at once summoned the neighbors, with who aid Mr. Schaffner rescued the
entire lot. They were buried under the stack for nearly three hours, but all
were save and are alive. The straw stack became water soaked through the
recent rains and this added weight, no doubt was responsible for the shed’s
collapse.
