Handke, Walter Frederick (9 September 1906-1 June 1983)
Walter Frederick Handke, 76, a Granton native, died Wednesday at his home in
St. Charles, Minnesota.
Services will be Saturday at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, St. Charles. The
Rev. Donald Lutz will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. St.
Charles.
He was born September 29, 1906 in Granton to Mr. and Mrs. Fred (Amanda Kurth)
Handke. He attended the elementary school in Granton and was a graduate of
Neillsville High School. He was a graduate of the University of
Wisconsin-Whitewater and attended graduate school at Iowa State College,
Iowa City. He also attended Montana State College, Missoula, Montana and
graduate school at University of Wisconsin-Madison.
He was a business teacher in Hixton, Lyndon, Calumet, Michigan and for 27
years in St. Charles. He retired in 1972.
He married Esther Mercer September 30, 1939 in Marshfield. She survives. He
was a member of St. Matthew;s Lutheran Church and the National Retired
Teachers Association.
Also surviving are one son, William J. of Shorewood, Minnesota; one
daughter, Mrs. Charles (Ellen) Bangtson of Osakis, Minnesota; and six
grandchildren. He was predeceased by one brother and one sister.
