Bruce Beilfuss was born in Withee in 1915. His Dad, Walter, ran a small
general store and his mother Elsie was a school teacher before they married.
He had a brother and sister. They lived on the north side of Withee and his
neighbors were the Munsons and Tufts who had sons the same age. Sam Munson,
Bill Tufts and John Jailing were his friends while attending grade school in
Withee. He remembers helping Peter Lang, who had a milk route in town,
deliver milk before school while in 7th and 8th grades. He also had a paper
route.
He graduated from law school in 1938 and returned to Clark County to
practice law. He set up his first practice in Abbotsford. He was elected
District Attorney of Clark County in 1941 and continued in that position
until entering the navy during WWII.
After returning from the service he resumed his district attorney position
until 1948 when he was elected 17th Judicial Court Judge. He held that
position until 1964 when he was elected to the Wisconsin Supreme Court and
from 1976 to 1983 served as Chief Justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
