As a teacher, athletic coach, grade and high school Principal and
Administrator of the Withee and O-W Schools for 40 years, he helped shape
many young lives.
He graduated from UW Stevens Point with a Rural Education degree and BS in
Biological Science and Social Studies and while there participated in
sports, one of them being football. In 1935 he returned to his home town of
Spencer and was teacher and principal of the school his brothers Ted (former
Green Bay Packer 1942-50), Robert and James attended. Although Spencer
didn't have football, he taught them to play the game after school hours and
encouraged them to go on to college.
He married Evelyn Dumbleton and they have three daughters: Mrs. Jacqueline (T.R.)
Johnson, Mrs. Barbara (J.) Stansberry and Mrs. Sandra (W.J.) Linn. Mrs.
Fritsch was also a teacher in Withee, she is now deceased.
He came to Withee in 1945 and coached six and organized eleven man football.
He helped in the consolidation of the school system in 1954, organized a
smooth move into the new building in 1963 as Superintendent, and saw the
rural schools close their doors. He retired in June of 1977. Students and
teachers he worked with said he was a "no nonsense principal and fair and
very supportive.
