The oldest brother of Niram H. Withee was born in Maine on Dec. 3, 1824. He
married Sarah Ann Nutting in 1854 in Maine.
He visited Wisconsin in 1855, then went to Jackson County in 1866 where he
engaged in farming until 1877, then came to Neillsville. His family followed
two years later. They had seven children.
Hiram served as Clark County treasurer in 1880 and as deputy treasurer for
his brother Niram H. before being elected to the office himself. He later
served on the County Board as Justice of the Peace. Hiram was afforded
security bond for his office by his brothers Niram H. and Levi who lived in
La Crosse in 1880. He was a very respected gentleman of character.
He died in 1897 from the effects of gall stone surgery. His funeral was held
in the large armory hall as the church would not hold the crowds that
gathered to honor him.
