John E. Jailing came from Jelling, Denmark, went to Irwin, South Dakota,
then to Minneapolis, where he met his wife Nelsena. They heard of a little
Danish village in Withee, WI. and decided to move here. In 1898 they opened
a grocery store on the corner of Front and Division Streets. In later years
that store burned down so they started a store in the next building. In
about 1935 John Jr. bought the business ness from his folks. He and I (Viola
Blunck) were married in 1941. In 1943 John was called into the service
(World War II). The business was sold to Art and Louise Meier. Their son
Jerry ran the store. Jerry was drafted into the army and Vie bought the
store back and ran it until John came home from the war in 1946. We had two
children, Jack and Linda. Jack has the IGA Store in Owen, Linda is the
beautician at the Health Care Center.
In 1947 a new store was built on the corner of Division and Front. In 1960
we sold the store to Norman and Irene Kell. After a few years Norman passed
away, Irene and son Roger ran the store. When they discontinued business,
Jim West and Gary Isaacs had an electric shop there. When they left the
building was torn down.
