Wayne J. Sondgeroth, age 97, of Thorp, WI, passed away on Sunday, October 6,
2019, at Oakbrook Health & Rehab in Thorp. Funeral services will be held at
11:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2019, at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic
Church in Thorp. Rev. Baskaran Sandhiyagu will officiate, and burial will
follow in New St. Hedwig's Catholic Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be:
Matthew Barth, Gregory Meyer, Sean Bauer, Emily Susa, Rebecca Walter, and
Brady Susa. Visitation will be held at the
church, on Saturday, from 10 a.m. until time of service.
Wayne Joseph Sondgeroth was born on April 20, 1922, in Mendota, IL, the son
of Leo W. and Julia M. (Prangenberg) Sondgeroth. He was raised on the family
farm and received his education at Mendota area schools. After completing
his education, he helped on the family farm until moving to Thorp in 1940.
Wayne went to work as a farmhand for Charlie Hankins, and later for Bill
Micke, until his marriage to Mary J. Klick on May 29, 1947, at St. Hedwig's
Catholic Church in Thorp. They rented a farm in the Town of Worden for five
years, until purchasing their own farm in the Town of Withee, in the fall of
1951. After retiring in 1978, Wayne moved to the City of Thorp. Over the
years, he held various other jobs, including working as a bouncer/dance
inspector at Mile-A-Way Bar from 1965- 1975, Mattes Livestock, Fred Turenne
Construction, and hauled cattle with Henry Sierocuk and Titus Byler.
He had many interests, but especially enjoyed spending time with his
grandchildren and great-grandchildren, gardening, picking walnuts, and
helping his granddaughter on her farm in Loyal, WI.
Wayne was a member of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church and the Knights
of Columbus Queen of Peace Council #4634.
He is survived by his three children: Trudy (Donald) Barth of Stanley,
Yvonne (Gerald) Susa of Greenwood, and Brian Sondgeroth of Eleva; six
grandchildren: Charlotte (Jason) Meyer, Marianne (Christopher) Barth,
Cynthia (Andy) Bauer, Connie (Allan) Walter, Charles (Casey) Susa, and Emily
Ann Susa; 18 great-grandchildren: Sean, Gregory, Rebecca, Marcus, Dillon,
Louis, Wayne, Matthew, Lindsey, Michael, Olivia, Lucy B., Kimberly, Sarah,
Tony, Caroline, Brady, and Gavin; one brother: Paul (Yvonne) Sondgeroth of
Mendota, IL; two sisters: Sr. Dorothea Sondgeroth of Jackson, MS and Elaine
Hassler of Watertown, WI; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary, on September 22,
2008; five sisters: Eleanor Baldeschwiler, Adelle Stack, Helen Lenz,
Margaret Joeger, and Marion Sondgeroth in infancy; and four brothers:
Delbert, Leon, Roland, and Larry Sondgeroth.
