results.

"SAD ACCIDENT - A MAN SHOT WHILE WATCHING FOR A DEER
We are indebted to Mr. E.D. Maxon, of Alma, for the particulars of an
accident that occurred near the northern border of that town on Friday of
last week. Mr. Jacob FLICK, a German, was watching for a deer in that
locality. He unfortunately had on a deerskin cap. A young man named Johnny
HURST was hunting for deer at the same time, and seeing what he supposed to
be one, fired and inflicted so severe a wound in the head of Mr. FLICK that
he died in about three-fourths of an hour. The unfortunate man leaves a wife
and eight children to mourn his loss. We have frequently taken to caution
hunters about being careful? This is a sad warning. Learn a lesson from it."

"ACCIDENTS - About two weeks ago a man by the name of Jacob Flick was
accidentally shot and killed by a man named Hurst, while hunting deer, in
the woods north east of Augusta. Flick had on a deer-skin cap at the time
and while passing through the brush, was taken for a deer by Hurst, and
immediately fired upon, with the result as above stated. Our western
exchanges are full of accidents resulting in a measure from carelessness on
the part of hunters. Will these individuals profit by these sad experiences
and be more careful in the future. The preserving of a man's life is worth
considerable caution, even, if in the exercise of it hundreds of deer escape
the aim of their eager pursuers."

Another of those serious affairs which often result from lack of caution,
occurred last Thursday, near the town of Lincoln. The facts as stated to us
are as follows - a young man named John Hurst, half cousin to John Hurst,
ex-town clerk of Lincoln, was following up a creek that runs through that
section of the county, while at the same time unbeknownst to young Hurst, a
Jacob Flick was watching for the same kind of game. Mr. Flick wore a beaver
skin cap, and was so secreted in the grass as to only expose a portion of
his cap, which attracted the attention of young Hurst, who supposed it to be
a deer, drew the gun to his shoulder, and took steady aim, and fired. The
deadly missile had performed its deadly mission and passed through the brain
of poor Jacob Flick, who expired within an hour after the fatal shot. He
leaves a wife and four children to mourn this most untimely and sad event.
Mr. Hurst, who deeply laments this terrible accident, is exonerated from all
blame in the premises, as he cannot be censured for the occurrence.
