Bush, Alma Victoria (10 April 1865 – 17 February 1951)

Alma Victoria Harvey was born April 10, 1865, on a farm near Castalia, Iowa. Her school days were spent there and eventually in 1883 she married Orson Henry Bush, of Castalia. There were 13 children, five of whom died in infancy; Vera, Mrs. Joe Smith died in 1918 of pneumonia at the age of 27 years. The seven surviving children are four sons: Elmer of B. R. Falls; Floyd, Glen and Wayne, of near Neillsville; three daughters: Mrs. Hardy Becker of Alma Center, Sadie Bush of Eau Claire, and Merle Janke of Wilson. Mrs. Bush’s health has been failing for a long time and death came as relief from suffering, Saturday, Feb. 17 (1951).

Services were held in the Methodist Church Monday, Feb. 19, just four weeks from the day the inst. services were held for Mr. Bush, the Rev. Brooks officiating at both services.

Mr. and Mrs. Bush were formerly members of the United Brethren Church in Castalia, Iowa. They lived ten years near Hixton, and since coming to Alma Center had attended the Methodist Church when their health permitted and helped in church and aid activities when possible. Mrs. Bush was very ill at the time Mr. Bush died four weeks ago. She has received every care from all members of the family all through the weeks and months – the daughters, Merle and Sadie coming every week to assist in her care to relieve nurse Rose Larson and Mrs. Becker and the sons, grandsons and their wives coming to help whenever possible. Nothing was left undone in loving care by every relative and close friend. The Rev. Brooks used the 23rd Psalm as the main theme of his talk, and spoke comforting words about the long life together that this worthy couple had had. There were beautiful flowers as always, on such occasions.

The pallbearers were five grandsons, Virgil Becker, Floyd Smith, Bert Bush, Howard Bartley, Don Frei and Arnold Opelt of Neillsville, (Donovan Becker who served as pallbearer for his grandfather’s funeral, had gone to Florida). The songs requested, “God Be With You” and “Sweet Hour of Prayer” were sung by Mrs. Northup, Mrs. Chrisinger, Mrs.Mortiboy, of Hixton, Mrs. Byington at the piano. Interment was made in the East Lawn Cemetery beside the husband who so recently was buried there.

McDermid and Floyd Smith, Burlington; Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Opelt, Neillsville; Mr. and Mrs. Don Frei, B. R. Falls; Mrs. M. E. Perry, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Perry, Castalia, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Foster Cooper, Ida Holmes, Mrs. Alfred Letson, Hixton; August Janke, of Neillsville.
