Thompson, Doris (5 April 1922 – 10 March 2009)
Doris E. Thompson, 86, of Hixton died Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at Black River Memorial Hospital, Black River Falls.
Doris was born April 5, 1922, in Garden Valley Township, Jackson County, to parents George and Hilma (Halverson) Erickson. She married Archie Thompson Feb. 23, 12952, in La Crosse. Archie preceded her in death May 15, 1988.
Doris received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education at the Restalozzi Froebel Teacher’s College in Chicago and taught in Rockford, IL, for many years as a substitute teacher. She moved to Shell Knob, MO, in the late 1970s and taught there for 13 years. In 1991, she retired from teaching and moved to Hixton. Doris was a dedicated educator, highly regarded by both her students and peers.
She was a member of the Upper Pigeon Creek Lutheran Church WELCA and the Partners of Black River Memorial Hospital.
Doris was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. In addition to family activities, she enjoyed spending time crocheting, cross-stitching and cooking. Taking care of her appearance and dressing fashionably were other enjoyable pastimes for Doris.
Doris is survived by her daughter, Mary Jo (Salvador Galicia Del Rio) Crain of Rockford, IL; her brother, Don Erickson of Washington; a brother-in-law, Everett “Bud” Thompson of Richland Center; a sister-in-law, Betty Jane Kimpton of Ocean Park, WA; one grandson, Todd Alan Crain of New York, NY; and several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Doris E. Thompson were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 2009, at the Upper Pigeon Creek Lutheran Church, rural Hixton, with Pastor David Christianson officiating. Burial took place in the Upper Pigeon Creek Lutheran Cemetery. Friends called Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton, and also one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
Casketbearers were Duane Jarrett, Edward Jensen, Jeff Jeras and Michael Modjeski.
