Greendeer, Joseph Alex “Coni Mani” (2 April 1962 – 22 March 2009)
Joseph “Wojo” Greendeer, 46 of Tomah passed away Sunday, March 22, 2009 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.
Joseph was born April 2, 1962, to Lyle and Rebecca (Lonetree) Greendeer Sr. in Reedsburg. He attended high school in Wisconsin Dells and in Fort Sill Indian School, OK. Joseph still holds the longest high school field goal kicked in the state of Oklahoma – 49 yards. He was a sports fanatic, loved sports trivia, playing horseshoes and shooting in pool leagues.
Joseph was a member of the Sons of American Legion Squad 129 in Black River Falls, a Medicine Lodge member, the head singer for “Winnebago Sons” and a member of the Indian Baptist Church. Joseph was a wonderful father and grandfather figure to his nieces, nephews, “sons, daughters and grandchildren.” He cherished his time spent with them.
Joseph is survived by his mother, Rebecca Greendeer of Tomah; his brothers, Conroy (Janet) Greendeer Sr. of Lake Delton, Frederick (Mary Tribble) of Hayward, and George Greendeer and Stuart Greendeer, both of Tomah; two sisters, Sharon (Mikel) Thompson of Tomah and Terry Greendeer of Black River Falls; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Joseph was preceded in death by his father, Lyle Greendeer Sr.; brothers, Kurt Greendeer Sr. and Lyle Greendeer Jr; and a sister Romanita Greendeer.
Traditional Ho Chunk funeral services were held Tuesday, March 24, 2009, 12 p.m. at the Greendeer Homestead near Tomah. Robert Mann presided. Burial was held in Indian Baptist Church Cemetery, Wisconsin Dells. Family and friends were invited for visitation Monday, March 23, 2009, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Torkelson Funeral Home in Tomah. Visitation was also held Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the Greendeer Homestead.
