Mother dies within hours of son's death
A joint funeral service will be held Saturday in rural Black River Falls after a 93-year-old woman apparently died of natural causes within hours of her 67-year-old son dying of lung cancer.
Evelyn E. Peterson, of Merrillan, collapsed in a funeral home Wednesday morning while making arrangements for her son's service, funeral home staff said. Arland R. Peterson, of Black River Falls, died at the hospital Tuesday night, about 15 hours earlier.
"It will be a very unusual funeral," said the Rev. Calvin Thoreson, who will officiate the service at Little Norway Lutheran Church, "In 30 years of the ministry, I've never had a double funeral under any circumstances."
While two or more relatives have been known to die in an automobile accident, for example, the circumstances of the Peterson deaths are very different.
"Because they died in such proximity to each other, their family thought they would have a double funeral," Thoreson said.
Arland Peterson, who leaves a son and two daughters, worked at Days Inn in Black River Falls, said Chuck Torgerson of Torgerson's Funeral Service. Evelyn Peterson, who is believed to have suffered a heart attack was a former resident of Black River Falls, Torgerson said.
