Margaret E. Janke, 87, of Alma Center died Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at Black River Memorial Hospital, Black River Falls.
Margaret was born Oct. 18, 1921, in Hixton Township, Jackson County, to parents George and Selma (Larson) Dahl. She graduated from high school in Alma Center. She married Omer A. Janke March 11, 1941, in Garden Valley, and together they farmed in the Garden Valley area for many years. They moved to Pine View Terrace in Black River Falls in 1995, and Omer preceded her in death in 2005. Margaret resided at the Pine View Care Center since 2006.
While on the farm Margaret performed many farm chores and jokingly called herself Omers hired hand. She served on the local election board in Garden Valley for over 50 years and also served on the Jackson County Canvass Election Board for many years.
She was an officer of the Women of Grace Lutheran Church in Alma Center. She volunteered at Pine View Care Center and Pine View Terrace, and she was a member of the Black River Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She also belonged to the Jackson County Homemakers organization and served as an officer in her local Garden Valley Club.
For many years, Margaret enjoyed keeping a diary of her daily activities. She also enjoyed keeping up with local news events and kept scrapbooks containing articles she clipped from local newspapers.
Margaret is survived by her daughter, Reta Moore of Hixton; her brother-in-law, Lester (Jean) Janke of Eau Claire; one granddaughter, Deb (Todd) Quarne of Blair; two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Nathan; besides several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Omer, and by her son-in-law, Robert Bob Moore.
Funeral services for Margaret E. Janke were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 25, 2009, at Grace Lutheran Church, Alma Center, with Reverend Steven Stork officiating. Burial took place in East Lawn Cemetery, Alma Center. Friends called Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton, also one hour prior to services at the church.
Casketbearers were Denis Janke, Jeff Janke, Larry Janke, Robert Janke and David Quarne. Ryan and Nathan Quarne were honorary bearers.
