Hagen, Valborg G (8 July 1916 – 2 September 2009)
Valborg G. “Val” Hagen, 93, of Black River Falls and formerly of Hixton died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009, at her residence under the care of Black River Hospice.
Valborg was born July 8, 1916 in Angelo, Monroe County, to parents Hartwick and Gertrude (Anderson) Wilhelmsen. She married Oswald Hagen Aug. 16, 1936, in Angelo.
Valborg, or “Val” as she was known, worked at a variety of jobs throughout her lifetime. She worked as an assistant in a physician’s office in Reedsburg, candled eggs in a processing plant in Hixton and did office work at Fort McCoy for several years during the Korean Conflict. She also worked as a project assistant for a government procurement and supply office in Joliet, IL.
Her interests included bird watching, especially hummingbirds, playing the organ and making occasional visits to the casino to try her luck. She and her husband also traveled to Arizona and Florida for several winters.
Valborg was a loving wife to her husband of 73 years. She enjoyed being a nurse to everyone’s ills and offering a wealth of opinions and advice to help solve any family “crisis.”
Survivors include her husband, Oswald; one son, Steven (Alice) Hagen of Sparta; one daughter Joyce Leeth of Black River Falls; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; besides other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her grandson, Lindsey Michael Maynard; two brothers, Omer and Stub Wilhelmsen; and sisters, Dorothy Prescot and Marian Riggle.
Funeral Services for Valborg “Val” G. Hagen were held Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Hixton, with Reverend John Kaplinski officiating. Burial took place in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Sparta. Friends called one hour prior to services at the church.
Casketbearers were: Chuck Embretson, Timothy Hagen, Christian Maynard, Craig Maynard, Stuart Maynard and Jon Quick. Honorary bearers were: Jill Hagen, Heather McDole and Gwyn Scherer.
Arrangements are with the Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton.
Memorials are preferred to Black River Hospice or Gundersen Lutheran Heart Institute.
