Walter L. Myers, 81, of Black River Falls died Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, in his home under the care of Black River Memorial Hospice.
Walter was born Dec. 29, 1927, in Nashwauk, MN, to William and Dolly (Robinson) Myers. He attended schools in Grand Rapids, MN.
Walter was a World War II Army veteran. He served from October 1945 until April 1947 and served during the occupation of Japan.
He married Phyllis L. Newman March 21, 1953, in Coleraine, MN.
Walter was employed by Inland Steel as a heavy equipment operator first at
Virginia, MN, and Chisholm, MN. In 1968 he became employed at the Jackson
County Iron Mine. He had been employed by Inland Steel for 32 years.
He enjoyed working on cars, woodworking, writing poetry, reading and swinging on
his porch swing. He had recently published a book of his poetry, The Times of
My Life.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; a daughter, Belinda (John) Johnson of Aurora, NE; four sons, Bradley (Hannah) Myers of Fairchild, Bill (Catherine) Myers of Merrillan, Bruce (Sandra) Myers of Jones, OK, and Bryan Myers of Black River Falls; 10 grandchildren, Leah Chandler, Brent Chandler, Delilah Johnson, Eric Myers, Christopher Myers, Leeann Scott, Carly Myers, Jordan Myers, Jennifer Myers and Nicole Myers; seven great-grandchildren, Nathan Myers, Melanie Myers, Ethan Myers, Taylor Myers, Tatum Scott, Makena Chandler and Alice Nolan; two sisters, Marie Winckler of Grand Rapids, MN, and Bessie Olds of Cohasset, MN; a brother, Chester Myers of California; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Joseph Myers, Charles Myers, James Myers, Norman Myers, Thomas Myers and Michael Myers; and a sister, Katherine Oberg.
Private funeral services with military honors were held Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, at the Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls. Reverend Terry Marg officiated.
Memorials may be given to Black River Memorial Hospice.
