He was a member of the National Honor Society, served as a class officer and on student council, was founding president of the ski club he and his sister started and was involved in many other school activities. He spent his summers stocking fish for the Department of Natural Resources.
Jim graduated with honors in biology from Lawrence University in Appleton in 1976. He graduated from the law school at Arizona State University in 1980. He practiced environmental law in Phoenix before his bipolar disorder worsened, altering his life. After relocating to Tulsa in the mid-90s, he worked for the State of Oklahoma Child Protective Services and continued his environmental pursuits.
