Christen, Fred (12 February 1869 – 27 October 1955)
Fred Christen was born in Bern, Switzerland, February 12, 1869, and died at Humbird, October 27, 1955, at the age of 86 years, nine months and 15 days.
He came to this country as a young man and first settled in Green County. On March 28, 1895, he was united in marriage to Magdalena Wiedmer at Monticello, Wis. They were engaged in cheese making in various places in the southern part of the state until 1909 when they settled on a farm in Jackson County, southwest of Humbird, which was their home until they retired to the village of Humbird 12 years ago.
He leaves one daughter, Mrs. Oscar L. Johnson of Taylor; three sons: Ernest of Farmington, Minn., Herman of Hixton, and Arthur on the home farm at Humbird; also a brother Nicholas and a sister Katherine, in Switzerland. There are 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
His wife preceded him in death on June 16, 1953.
He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church.
Funeral services were held October 31, Rev. H. A. Hartmann officiating. Pallbearers were six grandsons, Roy, Donald, and Robert Johnson, Richard Christen, Edwin Christen, James Christen. Burial was in Mentor Cemetery.
Relatives attending the services from away were Mr. and Mr. Ernest Christen, Doris and Richard, Farmington, Minn.; Dr. and Ruby Erickson, Madison, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Lisle Eyers, Claire Eyers, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rickll, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Rickll, Fred Rickll, Boscobel, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. John Pagle, Mrs. Mary Biddle and son James of Thorp.
