Master Sgt. Linus G. Leonhard (22 July 1917 - 7 January 1943)

Master Sgt. Linus G. Leonhard, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. P. Leonhard, 1408 Washington Avenue, was killed in action on Jan. 7. He is the first local soldier reported dead on the North African campaign, although another soldier, Pvt. Ivan Sadowska, has been listed as missing there.

Born in Hibbing, Minn., on July 22, 1917, Sgt. Leonhard attended the Sacred Heart Catholic School here and graduated from McKinley High School in 1935. After being employed about two years with the A. H. Weinbrener Company, he went to Los Angeles, Calif., where he attended a diesel engineering school for a year.

On Oct. 24, 1939, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces at Riverside, Calif., and was serving with a bombardment squadron at the time of his death.
