Rev. Father John Neises (17 April 1879 - 1959)
The Rev. Father John Neises, pastor of St. Louis Catholic church here
(Dorchester, Clark County, WI) from 1908 to 1912, died in Marshfield last
Friday, Oct. 9, suffering a fatal heart attack at his home there. He was 80
years old, and had been a priest 54 years, celebrating his Golden Jubilee in the
priesthood at Marshfield July 10, 1955.
Funeral services were held from St. John’s Catholic church at Marshfield Tuesday
at 11 a.m. The Most Rev. John P. Treacy, bishop of La Crosse, officiated at the
Solemn Mass of Requiem. A number of clergymen of this area also participated in
the rites, including the Rev. Father Gerald F. Schuh, pastor of the local
parish, and his brother, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. A. N. Schuh of Marshfield.
Burial was in the priests’ plot in Gate of Heaven cemetery at Marshfield.
Father Neises was born April 17, 1879, near Trier in Germany’s Rheinland. He was
educated in Trier and Belgium, and was ordained to the priesthood July 5, 1905,
in Baden, Germany.
He came to this country the same year, and in October was appointed assistant to
the Very Rev. John Eisen at St. John’s church in Marshfield, and in July of 1906
he became pastor of St. John’s at Summit. Two years later he came here, where he
was pastor while the parish rectory was built.
Following his work in the local parish, Father Neises served a number of other
parishes in this area. He was pastor at Thorp and Holway during the building of
rectories and churches there, and also directed building programs of other
parishes he served.
For reasons of health he retired in 1944 and moved to Marshfield, where he had
resided since. He relinquished all parochial responsibilities in 1950. A
brother, Charles Neises, in Germany survives.
