Final Rites for Sgt. Bruesewitz
Final rites were held last Thursday afternoon for Sgt. Harold E.Bruesewitz,
Spencer’s first World War II dead whose body was returned here for burial from
Belgium.
The 1:20 o’clock services were held at the Swarthout Funeral Home followed by a
2 o’clock service at St. John’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. H. C. Hinz
officiating. Burial was in the West Spencer cemetery.
Members of the Lee F. Pickett American Legion Post of Spencer and the Huber,
Schmitt, Bruesewitz Post of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Colby and their
auxiliaries attended the rites in a body.
Pallbearers were Donald Prehn, Clarence Gruenwald, Herbert Schwantes, Lawrence
Neuman, Russell Sampson and Lester Morrison. Flowers were in charge of Mrs. Ray
Parrette, Mrs. George Schwantes, Mrs. Fred C[?]mz and Mrs. Ed. Huber.
The girls choir sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Asleep in Jesus”. Services at
the grave were conducted by the Spencer Legion Post and the Colby V. F. W. Taps
were sounded by Miss Lucille Freeman.
Relatives from away who attended the memorial rites were Mr. and Mrs. Henry
Behrendt, Athens; Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Habeck, Colby; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur
Bruesewitz and son, Auburndale; Mrs. Lena Fredrick, Marshfield; Mrs. Ed. Zenner,
Stratford; Mrs. Emma Wood and sons, Mrs. Hilda Kopps, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Nobel,
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Steinwagner and son, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Klocke and son,
Marshfield; and Ed. Karpinski, Owen.
