Neff, Joseph “Joby” (? - 21 July 1968)
Funeral services were held July 24 from the United Church in Neillsville for
Joseph (Joby) Neff, 18, who died July 21 by drowning. The Rev. W. C. Koehler of
the United Church of Christ and the Rev. Jacob Grether of the Winnebago
Children’s Home officiated. Burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Eugene Wall, David and Dennis Olson, William Hagen, Randy
Reineck and Randy Short. Honorary pallbearers were: David Roberts, Charles and
Wayne Schlegelmilch, Bruce Lazotte, Steve Siebert, Joey Schield, tom Lukes and
Russ Karl, all high school basketball teammates of Joby.
“Nearer Still Nearer” and “I’m But a Stranger Here” were sung by Mrs. Ruth Van
Gorden, accompanied by Mrs. Jess W. Scott.
People from out of town attending included: Kathy Neff, Gilbert Shegonee, Mr.
and Mrs. Felix Marin, Anna, David and Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Rodriquez and
family, Mr. and Mrs. Pedro Marquez, all of Chicago, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Sam
Shegonee and Bill Shegonee of Wisconsin Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Seltrecht
and family of Gilmanton; Mr. and Mrs. William Sisson and Naomi of Greenwood;
Mrs. Jane Manthy of Portage; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Lautenbach of Granton; Mr. and Mrs.
Ed Walstad of Taylor; Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Miller of Menomonie; Mrs. John Grube
and Mrs. William Theiler of Humbird.
Many from the Greenwood and Granton areas also attended. The Athletic department
and Soil Conservation service office here attended in a body.
