Fire Destroys Farm Home
A fire which started at about 1 o’clock Friday afternoon destroyed the home
occupied by the Louis and John LaBarge families, about 1 ½ south and 1 mile east
of Unity.
Some household goods of Mr. and Mrs. John LaBarge, who lived downstairs, were
saved but nothing was saved upstairs, were the John LaBarges’ son and
daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Louis LaBarge were residing.
The nearby woodshed was also razed.
The Spencer Fire Department was called and arrived about a half hour after the
fire was discovered, having been given the wrong direction. Two firemen, who
went to the LaBarge place by car, arrived at about 1:20 o’clock, and at that
time the roof had already caved in.
The exact cause of the fire, which started on the west side of the house near
the chimney, was not determined.
At present Mrs. Louis LaBarge is living with her parents at Loyal and her
mother-in-law will stay with relatives and friends. The two men will stay with
neighbors to take care of the farm duties.
The LaBarge place is better known as the old George Burnett farm.
