Huls, Mathilda (24 OCT 1900 – 14 AUG 1924)
Mathilda Huls, daughter of John and Mathilda (Liske) Huls
As the morning sun was slowly appearing in the eastern horizon on Saturday,
August 14, 1924 the angel of death silently stole into the home of Mr. and Mrs.
John Huls, taking from them their only and beloved child Mathilda. Mathilda Huls
was born in Stanley October 24, 1900 where she lived until the spring of 1920
when she went with her parents to Ladysmith where she since resided. Early last
spring she was taken ill with and incurable disease and had been in declining
health ever since.
Mathilda was a good girl, true to her faith. She exemplified her goodness by
works rather than words. Only her close friends knew her intimate goodness of
heart and sterling moral uprightness. She was a loving daughter and measured her
every act seemingly by its probable effect upon others. She bore her sufferings
patiently, and in recent weeks apparently knowing that her end was near, she
kept her own council and met her end complacently and cheerfully in the hope of
causing her loved ones as little alarm as possible. Thus was an unselfish
character portrayed, and her going leaves a void in the community.
The remains were brought to the home of her uncle Fred Driessen at Thorp on
Sunday afternoon. When the funeral procession formed on Tuesday morning and
passed to St. Bernard's Church where Rev. Anthony Reinl of Fond du Lac, cousin
of the deceased officiated. Rev. John Neises, pastor of St. Bernard's, spoke
consoling words to the sorrowing parents and paid high tribute to the deceased.
The body was borne to its last resting place by six cousins, namely Fred
Driessen, Sylvester and Arnold Huls, Sylvester Vanderloop, Blazel Oberle,
Clarence Schmieder.
Those from out of town who came to attend the funeral were: Mrs. F. Haincices,
Mrs. August Joppe of Green Bay, Mrs. Robert Henke and Kate Henke of Sheboygan,
Gustave Marberger, Joe Fausbender and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fausbender of
Ladysmith, WI.
