Carl Mertens (16 Jul 1909 – 9 Jul 1993)
Carl Michael “Butch” Mertens, 83, died Friday morning, July 9, at his home in
Dorchester. Funeral services were held Monday morning, July 12, at St. Louis
Catholic Church, Dorchester, with Rev. Louis Schaefer officiating.
Burial took place in Dorchester Memorial Cemetery. Grandchildren served as
pallbearers.
Visitation and a parish rosary were held at Maurina Funeral Home in Dorchester.
The St. Louis Parish Council of Catholic Women prayed the rosary.
He was born July 16, 1909, in Dorchester to the late Henry and Elizabeth
(Henrichs) Mertens. He married Helen Kronschnabl on February 12, 1930. She died
April 24, 1984.
A lifetime resident of Dorchester, he worked with his father as a cattle dealer
from the age of 13, taking over Mertens Livestock after the death of his father
in 1957. He continued in the business until his retirement in 1982. He also
operated Kronschnabl Bowling Alley and Tavern for many years.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Dorchester Lions Club and St. Louis
Catholic Church.
Survivors include two sons, Steve (Judy) of Scottsdale, Ariz, and Timothy of
Park City, Utah; one daughter “Flossie” (Patrick) Keefe of Port Washington; two
brothers, George of Waukesha and Lawrence of Milwaukee; four sisters, Clara
Sailer of Owen, Marie (Robert) Schnedler and Pearl Schultz, both of Milwaukee,
and Madge (Arnold) Rhyner of Dorchester; 15 grandchildren; and ten
great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Jeannine Geohegan in April of
1992; and brothers, Albert, John and Alfred.
Memorials may be designated in his name to the American Heart Fund.
