Edith Miller (28 Jan 1909 – 4 Nov 1995)

Dorchester native Edith Fredericka Anna Johnson, Peru, Neb., died at her home there on Nov. 4, 1995. Interment was held at Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Peru after memorial services in Auburn, Neb., on Nov. 18.

She was born Jan. 28, 1909, in Dorchester to Anna and John Johnson. She graduated from Taylor County Normal School, Medford, and began her teaching career in Clark County in 1925,

She and normal school classmate Hanford Miller eloped in 1928 and were married in Caledonia, Minn. They then drove west to continue their teaching careers in Colorado. Edith taught in Ft. Collins, Nunn, and Hoehne, Colo. During these years their children were born. The family moved to Peru, Neb., in 1947 when her husband joined the faculty at Peru State College.

Peru was to be their home for the remainder of their lives. Mrs. Miller completed a BS degree from Peru State College in 1951. She taught in Brownville, Auburn and Brock Public Schools before retiring in 1971.

She enjoyed many years of fishing trips, the last to Colorado in September of 1994. Other pleasures were social clubs, sewing, quilting, needlework, reading, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter, Judith (David) Stiteler, Albuquerque, N.M.; a son, Hanford (Karen) Miller, Cowdrey, Color.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ernest Johnson, Dorchester, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, two brothers, her husband and a son, David.
