----------Harmon, Arthur (15 Nov 1868 – 12 Jan 1906)
Arthur C. Harmon was born in Princeton Wisconsin, Nov. 15, 1868 and died at
Madison, Wis., Jan. 12, 1906. Mr. Harmon received his education in the public
schools, after which he applied himself to learning the business of a printer,
which he had chosen as his life work. In 1884 he entered into a partnership with
Mr. C. Ellsworth in publishing “The Commonwealth” at Ripon, Wis. This
partnership continued for five years when Mr. Harmon sold his interest and moved
to Seattle, Wash., taking a position as reporter on the staff of a leading
daily, remaining with them about two years.
In 1891 he formed a partnership with his brother, O.A. Harmon and engaged in the
printing and publishing business in Superior, Wis., which was maintained for
eleven years. About ? years ago Mr. Harmon purchased the Fairchild Observer
which he has continued to edit and publish up to the time of his decease. Mr.
Harmon was united in marriage to Miss. Jessie M. Kanouse, of Sun Prairie, Wis.,
in October 1899.
Nearly a year ago he was prostrated by a severe attack of pneumonia, which
seriously threatened his life. In speaking of this illness to the writer of this
article, he stated that he thought he had made a good recovery, except that he
could not use his voice so well as before, but later, developments went to show
that his physical system was completely undermined at the time.
For some time past Mr. Harmon experienced considerable difficulty in his work
and about the middle of November his trouble presented a more serious aspect,
and he was compelled to take to his bed.
On Nov. 18th by the advice of his attending physician, he was taken to the
hospital at Madison. Later he was removed to the sanitarium, but the best
medical skill and nursing proved unavailing, and finally he was taken to the
home of his brother-in-law where on Jan. 12th death gave release from his
sufferings. During his painful illness Mrs. Harmon has been constantly at his
side and now she has the sympathy of a very large circle of friends in her deep
bereavement.
In the death of Mr. Harmon our village loses a most useful citizen. One who
always stood for the best interest of the place as he understood it. He was a
very pleasant and companionable man, and his taking away leaves a vacant place
in our midst that cannot readily be filled. He was a member of the Protestant
Episcopal Church; having been received into that communion by Bishop Nicholson
in West Superior in 1894.
While in this village he was a regular attendant of the Methodist Episcopal
church and though not entering that communion, was elected a member of its
Trustee Board, serving as Secretary of the Board when taken ill.
