Arneson, James/Viola (Silver – 12 Jul 1977)

About 450 guests were present Saturday evening, July 9, 1977 to observed the 25th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. James Arneson, Route 1, Dorchester. The affair began with a 5 p.m. supper in the Curtiss Hall, followed by a reception and dancing in the evening. Music was provided by Shirley Clarkson and Jay Block.

James Arneson and the former Viola Johnson were married July 12, 1952 at the Methodist Church at Stanley by the Rev. Leland Shaw. Mr. Johnson, Fontana; Mrs. Roland Turch..?, Loyal; Mrs. Ray Konwinski, Chippewa Falls; Elmer Johnson, Illinois, Robert Zake, Illinois, and Ray Konwinski were the attendants. Mrs. Richard Slackey, Bloomer, was flower girl, and Leroy Johnson, ring bearer, and Ray Anderson, Oscada, Michigan, and Art Johnson, Greenwood, ushers, and all of these original attendants were here for the anniversary observance.

The Arnesons live on a farm in the Town of Mayville; however he drives a truck for Fur Foods.

They have two children, Mark who is serving with the U.S. Army in Hawaii, and Mrs. Donald Smazal, Abbotsford. Mr. and Mrs. Smazal attended the celebration Saturday night. There is one grandchild.

Little seven-year-old Michael Messman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Messman, who had spent the past several weeks in Memorial Hospital in Medford, was planning on returning to his home soon. However, he had the misfortune to break his leg again Wednesday, and will have to remain there another three weeks.

Smazal, Mr./Mrs. Charles (45th – 11 Jul 1977)

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smazal, rural Abbotsford, observed their 45th wedding anniversary July 11, 1977. The couple was married at Milladore, July 11, 1932, and is still farming. They have 18 children, 55 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Those who helped them celebrate Sunday were Ron and Carol Krueger and family, and Sally and Brenda Smazal, Abbotsford, Jack and Irene Smazal, Butch and Judy Smazal, Colby, and Donald Smazals, Withee. They received congratulations from those who could not be present.

Among those who visited her through the weekend were Mr. and Mrs. Olin Thompson, Portage, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Helding and three granddaughters, Rothschild, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Thompson, Tomahawk, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Thompson, also of Tomahawk, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Doland and Mrs. Mabel Anderson.

Bischoff, Marie (21 Aug 1915 – 16 Jul 1977)

Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Louis Catholic Church in Dorchester for Mrs. Lenhard (Marie) Bischoff, age 61, Dorchester. She passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, Saturday, July 16, 1977. The Rev. William Buchman officiated at the 10:30 a.m. services. Burial will follow in the Dorchester Memorial Cemetery. Kraut-Maurina Funeral Home in Dorchester was in charge of arrangements.

The former Marie Thomsen was born August 21, 1915 in the Town of Deer Creek, where she attended Spruce Grove School. She worked for Dr. Raymond Nystrum in Medford, and then was employed in Chicago before her marriage to Lenhard Bischoff on September 1, 1945 at Holy Rosary Church in Medford.

They farmed in the Town of Holton until 1969, when they moved to the Village of Dorchester. She was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church and its Ladies Rosary-Altar Society and Dorchester Senior Citizens.

Besides her husband, she is survived by five sisters, Mrs. Josephine Jochimsen, Mrs. Clarence (Clara) Cypher, Mrs. Evelyn Hartman, Mrs. Albert (Lorraine) Nehiba and Mrs. Elder (Margaret) Frischman, all of Medford.

She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Bio: Strunk, Arnold – Injured in Cave-In (20 Jul 1977)

An Abbotsford City Worker, Arnold Strunk, had a near tragic accident July 20, 1977 when a seven-foot water line trench collapsed on him, burying him completely.

He was quickly dug out and taken by ambulance to the Colby Clinic. He was transferred to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, where he remained until Sunday. Reports have it that he is now in good condition at home.

According to one of the city workers, Strunk was working at the bottom of the trench on his knees when another worker saw the trench caving in. He yelled and Strunk got to his feet before he was covered by dirt.

Reports say that Strunk’s shoulder and chest area were the hardest squeezed in the incident. Worker and member of the Abby ambulance crew dug out the man, and got him into the ambulance.

The recently announce Spring Quarter deans’ list at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls included the names of 572 students.

To earn deans’ list honor at UW-River Falls, a student must achieve a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a four point scale, or midway between an “A” and a “B”. A total of 149 students earned a grade point of 4.0 or straight A average.

The following UW-River Falls students from the area were named to the deans’ list:

Abbotsford: Cindy Jicinsky, Rt. 1, Jan Schilling, Pine Street, and John Schultz, West Pine Street.

Colby: Daniel Mielke, Rt. 1 and Richard Mielke, Rt. 1.
