Neillsville – Civilians, Cops Take Coffee Break (2023)
Above, Jim Mankowski (middle left), chief of the Neillsville Police Department,
Isaac Guyer, (front, left), patrolman, and Jason Wampole (back, right) sat down
with members of the public, such as Jack Miller (middle, right) and Bill Arndt
(front, right) during National Coffee with a Cop event Oct. 4, held at Hardee’s.
Topics ranged from things like round-abouts to the senior center. This was the
second year Mankowski had done the event and, at around 9 a.m., about 30 people
had either greeted the officers or sat down to talk. Photo below, Mankowski and
Guyer moved around the establishment to greet civilians themselves, too.
Mankowski said that anything the police and public officials could do to engage
with the public, they should do more of. “We get our authority from the people,”
Mankowski said. “We enforce the people’s laws, “And as long as there’s common
ground between people and government, there’ll be a successful relationship.”

Honor Flight To Take Off October 16 (2023)
The Never Forgotten Honor Flight organization based in Wausau will fly 108
Vietnam and two Korea Era veterans from central and northern Wisconsin, three
coming from Clark County, to Washington, D.C. to see the memorials that honor
their service on Monday, Oct. 16. It is the organization’s 46th flight since the
first Never Forgotten Honor Flight took place April 27, 2010.
Clifton Hollister, from Thorp, is a Vietnam era Marine Corps radio operator
veteran who served in North and South of DaNang, Marble Mountain and Quang Tri
Province.
Dennis Lato, from Withee, is a Vietnam era Navy veteran who served as a hull
technician, metal fabrication, welder and firefighter on the east coast/Atlantic
Ocean.
Korea James Wilde, also from Thorp, is an Army Infantry who served in Korea.
Sixty-two guardians will accompany the veterans on the one-day round trip that
departs Central Wisconsin Airport at 6:30 a.m. and is scheduled to return at
approximately 10 p.m.
The public is invited to the Central Wisconsin Airport to welcome the veterans
home Monday night, and Honor Flight officials recommend arriving no later than
8:30 p.m. Free parking for those welcoming these veterans home will be provided.
Never Forgotten Honor Flight (NFHF) veteran alumni are encouraged to wear their
NFHF-issued clothing (hat, shirt or windbreaker) for the welcome home ceremony.
After Monday’s trip, the Never Forgotten Honor Flight will have flown 4,406
veterans to Washington, D.C.
All veterans that served prior to May 7, 1975, are encouraged to submit an
application (via the Never NFHF website, or calling 715-573-8519). The only
criteria for veterans to qualify for an Honor Flight is to have served (active
duty, reserves or national guard) prior to May 7, 1975, regardless of where they
served.
Veterans receive a free round-trip flight, and guardians pay $500 for the
opportunity to accompany one, two or three veterans on the trip. Veterans and
guardians interested in taking a future Honor Flight must complete an
application at
www.neverforgottenhonorflight.com or contact the organization at
715-573-8519.
The veterans are selected based upon the order in which their applications are
received and the conflict they served in. Preference is given to World War II
era veterans, then Korea era Veterans and then Vietnam era veterans. Veterans
who are terminally ill, regardless of when they served in those three eras, are
given top preference.
Guardians should be 18–69 years old and able to lend physical assistance to the
veterans (cannot be a spouse or “significant other.” Veteran and guardian
applications can be completed online or mailed to Never Forgotten Honor Flight,
225780 Rib Mountain Dr., #234, Wausau, WI, 54401.
North Central Wisconsin’s Never Forgotten Honor Flight is the nation’s 77th
regional hub and one of five Wisconsin Honor Flight hubs. The Wausau-based
organization was certified by the National Honor Flight Network office in
Springfield, OH on Dec. 11, 2009.

By L. B., reporter
The Unity American Legion Post #358 hosted a pancake breakfast for members of
the community and supporters of the Legion Oct. 1.
Eggs, sausage and, of course, pancakes were served by volunteers. Every
volunteer was a member of the Legion and Auxiliary unit, including Denise
Cliver, Jan Ammons, Judy Krueger, Lilli Weis, Karen Neuman, and JoAnn Runge.
“This is to raise funds for veteran organizations,” Richard Strathmann said. “We
donate to the Highground and the V.A.”
Strathmann is a veteran who organized the breakfast. Strathmann commands the
Legion and is always looking for more members to join his post.
“We host six breakfasts from October to March,” Strathmann said. “We purchase
the ingredients from local businesses, like the county market. We usually make
about $1,200 from each breakfast.”
Over 150 people attended the pancake breakfast.
“Before COVID, we had about 350,” Strathmann said. “Now, our average is about
225–250. We serve the whole area, not just Unity.”
Strathmann encouraged anyone who is interested in joining the Unity American
Legion to call him at 715-721-0433.

Barth, James W. (24 April 1934 – 11 October 2023) With Flag
James W Barth was called home by his loving Savior on Wednesday, October 11,
2023, holding the hand of his wife of 67 years. Jim had been living at
Neillsville Retirement Community since March, after multiple strokes.
Jim was born April 24, 1934, in the Town of Fremont to Johnny & Hilda (Quicker)
Barth. He attended country schools in Town of Lynn and in the Marshfield School
District, while helping on his family's farm. James served in the US Navy for
two years, on various destroyers as a fireman in the boiler room. On April 7,
1956, Jim married the love of his life, Marjorie E Galbreath. Except for their
time in the Navy, Jim & Margie lived in the Town of Lynn, doing what they loved
most: raising their family and farming. In 1992, they "retired" from farming,
but kept the original 100 acres of his family farm, building their home 100 feet
from his birth place. A farmer is never really retired so Jim was outside every
day doing something in his yard or machine shed, or taking his ATV to check the
fences and fields. Jim always wore many hats over the years, working at various
other jobs too. He seemed to be the one his family went to if we needed
something done.
Jim is survived by his wife, Marjorie and two children, Michael (Dee) Barth,
Onalaska, and Sandra (Terry) Schmitz, Granton. He was "Grandpa" to five
grandchildren: Nathan (Tanya) Barth, Tara (Michael) Kamien, Kortney (Alex) Folk,
Logan (Hali) Schmitz & Nicholas Schmitz, and one step grandson Travis Norling.
He was so very proud to be "Great Grandpa" to nine great grandchildren: Kaitlin
& Lukas Barth, Colton, Lawson & Garrett Kamien, Kora & Adeline Folk, and Tobin &
Tessa Schmitz. He is also lovingly survived as "Uncle Jim" to many nieces and
nephews. You ALL held a special place in his heart. He is also survived by two
sisters-in-law: Shirley Barth and Mae Revak.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, brothers Robert Barth, Raymond Barth, sister
Norma Vandenbergen, brother-in-law Harold Vandenbergen, and one step grandson
Troy Norling. Jim & Margie are members of Zion American Lutheran Church of
Granton. Funeral & celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Our family cannot express enough thanks to the amazing staff at Neillsville
Retirement Community. We want to thank Tammy, Peggy, Robyn, Morgan, MacKenzie,
Cassie, Emily, Paige, Lily & Wendell, and also the very special ladies of
Compassus Hospice: Maranna, Dawn, Mariah & Jackie, as well as the spiritual
staff. Without you all, Dad's last months on earth would have been so much
harder. You all are angels among us.
Online Condolences may be made at

with funeral arrangements.

"Don't worry, I got this!" Throughout his whole journey, he never stopped
amazing people with his fight and determination.
Although he spent most of his life in the Cardiac ICU, he was surrounded by
people who loved

Marc Edward Halvorson, 71, of rural Humbird, passed away in hospice care at his
home on Thursday evening, Oct. 12, 2023.
Marc was born in Whitehall, on August 12, 1952, son of Clarence and Gladys
(Rumpel) Halvorson. Early in his life he was raised with his siblings in the

Following his education Marc served in the United States Army. After his

life working on the oil rigs. Wanting to be closer to family he moved back to
Wisconsin. During his life he had driven dump truck for Clyde Elvord Trucking
out of Madison, he farmed for a time in Fairchild, worked for Ashley as a
spotter truck driver in the yard, and before ill health forced his trucking
retirement, he was transporting logs for Solberg Trucking out of Blair and
Whitehall. Not wanting to be completely idle, for over the past year he was
employed at the Palmer House in Fall Creek.
In his spare time he enjoyed fishing with family and friends, tending to his
cats, drinking coffee and friendly conversations.
Marc will be dearly missed by 5 siblings, Richard Halvorson (Carol Bergstrom) of
Humbird, Rita Halvorson of Pleasantville, Raye (Richard) Chandler of Neenah,
Gwyn (Nickie) Halvorson of Humbird and John (Lois) Halvorson of Merrillan; step

Halvorson; nephew Josh Halvorson; and Linda’s sons, Steve Jr. and David Lee
Halvorson and Jerry Gravits.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, October 19, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the
