Kirsten Petersen (3 Sep 1872 - 14 Jan 1960)
Funeral services for Mrs. Nels Petersen, 87, were held from Peace Evangelical
church here Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Fred W. Kollath, pastor, officiated at
the final rites for the long-time resident of the town of Holton who died at
home there Saturday, January 9. Mrs. Frank Rauscher and Mrs. Ray Pope sang "The
Old Rugged Cross" and "Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling" at the services.
Mrs. Jerome Rankl, organist, accompanied the singers.
Burial was in the Peace Cemetery, and the deceased's sons Henry, Hans and Walter
and grandsons Harley Wellner , Arthur Wellner, and Theodore Schlinsky, serving
as pallbearers. Polnaszek Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Petersen, in failing health for some time past, became seriously ill in
recent days, and on Saturday succumbed to what was termed the complications of
old age.
Kirsten Hansen was born in Denmark on September 3, 1872, and came to America
when she was 20 years of age. On July 8, 1895 she and Nels Petersen were married
at Strongs Prairie in Adams county. They operated a farm near there until 1918
when they moved to the town of Holton and settled on a farm where they resided
since.
On July 10, 1955, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a family
dinner and open house. She was a long time member of Peace Evangelical church.
Surviving are the widower, three sons and three daughters, Hans and Walter of
Milwaukee, Henry on the home farm, Mrs. Wade (Marie) Wellner, Hancock, and Ann
and Agnes presently at home. Five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and
three brothers in Denmark, Christian, Peder, and Lars Hansen, also survive.
