John H. Johnson (13 Feb 1872 - 8 Jul 1959)
Funeral services for John H. Johnson, 87, were held here (Dorchester, WI)
Saturday, July 11. The Rev. Fred W. Kollath, pastor, officiated at rites in
Peace Evangelical church at 2:00 p.m., and the Veterans of Foreign Wars post of
Abbotsford accorded full military rites at the interment in Dorchester Memorial
Cemetery.
Mr. Johnson died early last Wednesday, July 8, at his home here in the village,
following an illness of several years duration. He had been seriously ill for a
considerable time prior to his death. He was hospitalized about two weeks in
Medford, beginning last October 28, and then spent about a month in a veterans
hospital in Minnesota.
Mrs. Jerome Rankl was organist for the final rites and played accompaniment for
Miss Alice Tauchen who sang "Rock of Ages" and the 23rd Psalm. Veterans of
Foreign Wars, who assisted with arrangements for the Spanish-American War
veteran, also furnished the pallbearers who were Lyle Johnson, Vern Dohm, Otto
Haeckel, Lyle Underwood, Arvin Kramer, and William Herman.
John Henry Johnson was born February 13, 1872, at Svelvik, Norway, coming to
this country with his parents at the age of ten years. He spent his youth
working logging camps and sawmills, turning to farming when the logging industry
began to fade in this area.
He and Anna Lindeman were married October 28, 1903, at her home here, Rev. F.H.
Moecker officiating at the ceremony. They moved to the Lindeman family farm in
the town of Mayville in 1915 and farmed it until 1939. The couple's son, Ernest,
and family now own and operate the farm.
The Johnsons moved to the village in 1945 when they purchased the former
Krakenberger house, where they have resided since. He was a member of Peace
Evangelical church and the Abbotsford post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Surviving are his widow; two sons, Ernest of the town of Mayville and Orin of
Seattle, Wash.; three daughters, Ethelyn (Mrs. Seth White) of Ogden, Utah; Edith
(Mrs. Hanford Miller) Peru, Neb.; and Ruth (Mrs. Theodore Boeckler) of Medford.
Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A daughter, a sister and a brother preceded him in death.
