Elizabeth Mertens (16 Mar 1881 - 6 Feb 1974)

Mrs. Elizabeth C. Mertens, 92, died at 4:05 p.m. Wednesday at the Colonial House of Colby.

Rites will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Louis Catholic Church in Dorchester with the Rev. Jacob J. Burggraph, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Dorchester Catholic cemetery.

Visitations may be made after 3:00 p.m. Friday at the Kraut-Maurina Funeral Home Dorchester, where the Ladies Altar Society rosary service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Friday, followed by a parish rosary at 8:00 p.m.

The former Elizabeth Christine Henrichs was born March 16, 1881, in Germany and came to Medford (township) from Germany in 1892. Her marriage on October 28, 1902, at Medford was to Henry Mertens, who preceded her in death July 6, 1968.

They lived in the town of Little Black and later moved to Dorchester, where she resided until entering the nursing home in July of 1972.

She was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church and an honorary member of its Ladies Altar Rosary Society.

Survivors include four daughters: Mrs. Clara Sailer, Owen; Mrs. Louis (Pearl) Scholz and Mrs. Robert (Marie) Schnedler, Milwaukee; and Mrs. Arnold (Magdalen) Rhyner, Dorchester; four sons: Alfred Mertens, Jefferson; Carl Mertens, Dorchester; George Mertens, Waukesha; and Lawrence Mertens, Calif.; a brother, Joe Henrichs, Milwaukee; 52 grandchildren, 150 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, two brothers and three sisters.
